Exploiting their combined 80 years of automotive experience, together with mutual fanaticism for authenticity and perfection, ICON founders Dave Eaton and John Hartland began the development and build of the ICON 917K project in late 2011.
The initial catalyst was the purchase of a set of body panels advertised on eBay as coming from moulds taken from David Piper's Porsche 917K/10, the car he raced successfully in endurance racing in 1969.
The ICON 917 has been created in a manner that was not available in the late 1960's when the Porsche 917 was conceived, due to the non-existence of three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) technologies..
Capitalising on Dave Eaton's career-led contemporary skills in CAD, the ICON 917K was reverse-engineered from an astonishingly complex library of original historical data of the Porsche 917 that is available in multiple publications and on the web.
95% of ICON 917K components were digitally designed in CAD, enabling a very accurate build and assembly process. Once the jigs were completed the first chassis was built for David Eaton's prototype by a specialised UK engineering company, followed by the assembly of all components to complete the car build.
After rigorous testing and computer-aided engineering (CAE) to fulfil both the ICON founders' own fanatical quality standards and the UK vehicle road legality requirements, the ICON 917 prototype (001) passed the strict UK IVA test with the DVLA in September 2019 and was UK road-registered, with ICON acknowledged as a fully-fledged car manufacturer.
